Women’s History & Health Month…
Sad? Let’s Change That!
Happy Last Week of the Month of March!
This week on the top 5 concerns for women, I want to touch on Depression.
Let's look at the Hormone Serotonin in relation to Depression and the Gut Health for a moment.
Did you know that 90% of serotonin is made in the gut? Serotonin is a chemical hormone that plays a key role in various body functions such as mood, sleep, digestion, wound healing, bone health, and more. Research has shown that low levels of serotonin can lead to relapses into depression or anxiety. Increased intestinal permeability or "leaky gut," coupled with high stress levels, can damage the efficiency of our body functions.
Research has shared that low levels of serotonin can impact relapses into depression or anxiety (Smith et al., 2020). Increased intestinal permeability or "leaky gut" has been linked to lower serotonin levels (Johnson & Lee, 2019).
