This April 6th, Cassandra, a Master Barber, Futuristic Hairstyling Speaker, and Self-Love Advocate, will bring her artistry to Glitz & Glamour 2025, supporting the I Am Coyon Ford Foundation. As a featured stylist, she will help transform cancer survivors, offering them not just a new look, but a renewed sense of confidence and self-love.

Cassandra’s journey began long before she became a sought-after hairstylist. At just 13 years old, necessity sparked her passion—when her mother couldn’t afford salon visits, she took matters into her own hands, learning to cut and design hair for her siblings. What started as an act of love became a lifelong mission: to empower others through hair.

Her talent, precision, and unique eye for innovation set her apart in the industry, but her true gift lies in her ability to uplift and inspire. Having faced bullying and feelings of being an outcast, Cassandra understands firsthand the power of transformation—not just on the outside, but within. Today, she uses her skills to help people embrace their individuality and find confidence in their own skin.

Now, at Glitz & Glamour 2025, Cassandra is honored to be part of an event that changes lives. With fashion curator Coyon Ford leading this annual initiative, funds will be raised to provide makeovers, spa treatments, and special gifts to cancer survivors, bringing them joy and comfort during their battles.

For Cassandra, this is more than styling—it’s about healing, empowerment, and showing every survivor just how beautiful and powerful they truly are.

    Women’s History & Health Month…

    Sad? Let’s Change That!

Happy Last Week of the Month of March!

This week on the top 5 concerns for women, I want to touch on Depression.

Let's look at the Hormone Serotonin in relation to Depression and the Gut Health for a moment.

Did you know that 90% of serotonin is made in the gut? Serotonin is a chemical hormone that plays a key role in various body functions such as mood, sleep, digestion, wound healing, bone health, and more. Research has shown that low levels of serotonin can lead to relapses into depression or anxiety. Increased intestinal permeability or "leaky gut," coupled with high stress levels, can damage the efficiency of our body functions.

Research has shared that low levels of serotonin can impact relapses into depression or anxiety (Smith et al., 2020). Increased intestinal permeability or "leaky gut" has been linked to lower serotonin levels (Johnson & Lee, 2019).

To prevent spiraling into depression, seek help from your doctors and practitioners. Bethany Monte, a practicing Functional Medicine Practitioner, and Michelle Bailey, a Functional Nutrition Coach, invite you to join them on this journey with The Ultimate Liver Detox. This program offers:

    Women’s History Month…

    What’s our Health Status?

    Happy Women's History Month!

This month we honor Women’s History Month, and we want to celebrate by highlighting how women age 35 and over can transform their health and become trailblazers for future generations who live long, fulfilling and healthy lives.

Throughout March Functional Well-being is dedicated to promoting a health legacy for our young ladies.  Let’s look at the Top 5 Health Concerns facing women:

    • Breast Cancer

    • Depression

    • Heart Disease

    • Osteoporosis, and

    • Autoimmune Disorder

Today let’s discuss a bit on Autoimmune Disorder.  Last month Bethany Monte, and I looked at hormone imbalances and the way it affects women’s health and lifestyle. (if you haven’t seen our 2-Day Master Class Series check out Day 1 & Day 2 of the series).

Hormone imbalances can cause autoimmune diseases and vice versa - autoimmune diseases can cause hormone imbalances, there is a bidirectional relationship between the two. So ladies it is important to note what maybe your root cause to having high estrogen or diabetes or Hashimoto disease. But other factors can influence the health of our immune system as well as our hormone levels such as stress, sleep, environment and gut health.

With this in mind, I would like to urge you to take into consideration the various triggers that may enhance autoimmune disorder and strive to mitigate such stressors. One simple thing maybe that of chewing your food adequately to allow for the digestive process to be as effective as possible to ensure the absorption of necessary nutrients. However if there are complications such as a "leaky gut" there is need to heal same to ensure a healthier immune system.

Here is where Bethany Monte, Functional Medicine Practitioner and Michelle Bailey, Functional Nutrition Coach can help.  Join us as we explore ways to help you heal from the inside out. We want to support you on this journey of healthy living.  Let’s connect to learn more on this opportunity today by clicking HERE.

    This week well-being tips:

Not sure how to increase your daily activity daily? Here is one way -

Taking the stairs instead of the elevator is a great way to increase your physical activity levels daily. Not only does this simple choice boost your cardiovascular health, but it also improves muscle tone and burns calories. Plus, it's an easy way to fit exercise into a busy schedule without needing extra time set aside for workouts.

Incorporating short bursts of activity throughout your day can make a significant difference in your overall fitness. You might also consider parking further from the entrance when you go shopping or taking a brisk walk during your lunch break. These small changes add up and contribute to a healthier lifestyle.

Remember, every step counts towards your well-being. By making conscious decisions to move more, you can enhance your energy levels, improve your mood, and support your long-term health goals. Let's embrace these opportunities to stay active and enjoy the benefits they bring to our lives.

Let's MOVE! Check out more exercises at  FxWB New Beginnings Podcast. Do like and subscribe to the channel.

From Pastor John E. Girton, Jr.

Governor Mike Braun’s recent directive to halt Medicaid service advertising in Indiana is a troubling development for many families, especially those like mine who are part of the “sandwich generation,” caring for both children and aging parents. This policy not only threatens the health security of vulnerable populations but also exacerbates the challenges faced by caregivers of dementia patients.

In Indiana, Medicaid serves as a critical lifeline for numerous residents, particularly within marginalized communities. Data indicates that Black and Hispanic/Latino Hoosiers are disproportionately represented among Medicaid enrollees. According to the Indiana Medicaid Enrollment Dashboard, these communities rely heavily on Medicaid for their healthcare needs. Curtailing outreach and advertising efforts is likely to deepen existing disparities, leaving many without essential health coverage.

The burden on family caregivers in Indiana is substantial. The Alzheimer’s Association reports that 216,000 family caregivers in the state provide unpaid care to individuals with Alzheimer’s or other dementias, amounting to 322 million hours of care valued at $5.1 billion. This immense responsibility often leads to emotional, physical, and financial strain.

My personal journey mirrors these statistics. A year ago, my father, who suffers from dementia, was dropped from Medicaid. This loss of coverage forced me to leave a six-figure job to care for him full-time, as his memory care costs exceeded our financial means. Balancing his care with the needs of my high school-aged child has been an overwhelming challenge. The lack of Medicaid support has not only strained our finances but also taken a toll on our mental and emotional well-being.

Governor Braun’s approach to reducing Medicaid enrollment by stopping advertising and tightening eligibility criteria fails to consider the real-life implications for families like mine. Instead of making cuts, the administration should focus on understanding and addressing the needs of the growing population of aging Hoosiers. This includes tackling the high costs of services and supplies essential for dementia care. Removing health resources from those who need them most is not a solution; it is a step backward that will only increase the burden on families and the healthcare system.

It is imperative that policymakers recognize the invaluable role of Medicaid in supporting caregivers and their loved ones. By ensuring access to necessary services and support, we can uphold the health and dignity of all Indiana residents, regardless of their economic status or racial background.
